Coolbinia Art Club

This year, Mrs Jamieson, on behalf of the Coolbinia Arts Committee, has introduced a lunchtime Art Club to celebrate creativity across the school. Art Club runs in Weeks 3, 6, and 9 on Friday lunchtimes, and is open to all students from Years 1–6 who would like to join in.

Each activity is selected by our two dedicated Year 6 Art Leaders, who also take responsibility for setting up, packing away, and helping to run the sessions. They are supported by our five enthusiastic Year 4 Art Helpers, who encourage and guide younger students as they explore their creativity.

So far this year, students have enjoyed a wide variety of activities including natural collage and leaf rubbings, yarn wrapping, pebble painting, lucky dip cartoon sketching, and badge making. These sessions have been a wonderful way for students to connect, create, and share their love of art.

Nearer to Nature - Year 6

On Tuesday of week 5 Yr 6 enjoyed an incursion from the Nearer To Nature team. We entered the Kwobadarn and saw a table with a model diorama of Perth and its waterways. There were the hills of the Darling escarpment, Swan and Canning Rivers, the airport, King’s Park, lakes and roads.

The two presenters were really nice and engaging and shared details about how our catchment and the Swan Coastal Plain has changed from clean rivers and plenty of wildlife to damaged rivers, pollution and dying animals. We set off into groups and each one got a pollutant. Our group got animal manure. We had to explain how it might get into the river and why it’s bad for the environment.

After all our groups shared, we learned that there’s something called and algal bloom. When we saw a demonstration of how it spreads we were shocked that it was like wildfire. Algal blooms make sea animals die, makes plants rot and if the fish die, how would that smell? We finished the presentation with a short wrap up about the effects that pollution has and waved our good-byes. My favourite part was putting the animals where they belong. Someone put a dolphin on the hills!
