Artopia 2018 featured 3D creations in the context of the NAIDOC Week theme ‘because of her, we can!’.
Celebrations began with a special assembly conducted by the Year 4/5 class. Aboriginal women who demonstrated success in a range of fields were showcased by the students first, and the PLC Gorna Liyarn Dancers followed with three stunning dance performances. After the assembly the Gorna Liyarn Dancers led a joyful dance workshop with the Year 3s from Room 5.
Throughout the day, Acacia Collard and her assistants created an amazing sand art mural on the oval. Acacia also directed sand art creations by Year 4 and 5 students, as well as Kindy children.
To commence the afternoon celebrations, Sandra Harben conducted the Welcome to Country, which was followed by an engaging and interactive performance from the Wadumbah Dance group.
As usual, the class displays demonstrated an amazing range of 3D and environmental art works:
Overall, the school was abuzz with activity and excitement as everyone celebrated the students’ artistic creations and the contributions of Aboriginal artists to the education of our children. Baskets full of thanks to our children for their art works, to all staff for class contributions and stunning displays, for the help of our Year 6 leaders, our school community partners, the Arts Committee for organising the event, and parents for help with countless tasks from the food stalls, to parking duties and packing up. A fabulous community effort … congratulations to all!
